Challenger in Iowa Senate Race Earns Endorsement from Nation’s Leading Pro-Choice Advocacy Group to Unseat Anti-Choice Republican Senator Ernst
For Immediate Release: Thursday, November 7, 2019
NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Theresa Greenfield in her campaign to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate and unseat anti-choice incumbent Republican Senator Ernst. This race is crucial to flipping the Senate and protecting reproductive freedom.
“As anti-choice lawmakers continue their assault on our most fundamental freedoms in Iowa and nationwide, we need the leadership of pro-choice champions like Theresa Greenfield in the Senate now more than ever,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Iowans deserve so much better than Senator Ernst, who has been a rubber stamp for Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell’s harmful agenda and anti-choice judicial nominees while spouting derogatory and hateful rhetoric about reproductive rights. NARAL is proud to endorse Theresa Greenfield and ensure Iowans have the kind of leader who will fight for them in practice, not just on paper.”
“I’m deeply grateful to have NARAL’s support in our race, and I look forward to working with members across Iowa to flip this seat,” said Theresa Greenfield, candidate for U.S. Senate. “As long as Senator Ernst and Majority Leader McConnell are in Washington working to defund Planned Parenthood and undermine Roe v. Wade, it’s clear that women’s health and rights will be at risk and under attack. As Iowa’s next Senator, I’ll fight to protect reproductive freedom and ensure we defend every woman’s constitutional right to make her own health care decisions.”
Theresa Greenfield grew up in a hard-working rural farm family and currently serves as President of Colby Interests, one of Des Moines’ oldest family-held real estate and development companies. She is running against anti-choice incumbent Republican Senator Ernst, who has consistently promoted Donald Trump’s extreme agenda in the Senate.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all. For more than 50 years, NARAL has worked to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. Since 1969, NARAL has made history, grown to over 2. million members, and met the moments that have defined this fight with action, power and freedom. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
