In light of the news that the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) will only endorse candidates who have publicly committed to support reproductive rights and will no longer back anti-choice candidates, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“The announcement from DAGA today could not come at a more important moment. Blatantly unconstitutional abortion bans are sweeping the nation, criminalizing abortion and terrifying women about our place in this country. Attorneys General are now on the front lines in defending women’s rights, especially when it comes to our fundamental right to make our own decisions about pregnancy. Women in 2019 America are scared and angry, and support for the right to access abortion is at a historic high. More than 7 in 10 Americans support the rights enshrined in Roe v. Wade, as do 87% of Democrats and overwhelming majorities of Independents. The Republican party is waging an all-out assault against women and pregnant people, and voters have to know someone has our backs in this crucial moment. Now, we know that Democratic Attorneys General do. We applaud DAGA’s leadership and hope that other Democratic committees and organizations see this moment for what it is and follow suit in supporting women and our well-being.”
