With the Supreme Court set to hear June Medical Services v. Gee in March 2020, the first major abortion case since Brett Kavanaugh joined anti-choice Trump nominee Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, anti-choice Senators and House Members today signed an amicus brief calling on the Court to consider overturning the landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade and calling the right to an abortion “unworkable.”

Statement from Ilyse Hogue, NARAL Pro-Choice America President:

“The anti-choice movement is no longer trying to hide their real agenda. They are gunning to end Roe, criminalize abortion and punish women. If it wasn’t clear why we fought like hell to stop Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation before, it should be crystal clear now. They gamed the system and stacked the Supreme Court just for this moment. But we will not back down. We will hold these anti-choice politicians accountable for working to rip away our reproductive freedom.”

Let’s be clear: public support for Roe v. Wade is at an all-time high, with 77% of Americans supporting it. The vast majority of Americans do not want to see Roe overturned, and the anti-choice movement’s ultimate agenda of banning abortion is unpopular in every single state in the country.

And Americans understand what’s at stake. According to a Navigator Research poll, the vast majority of Americans believe the right to have an abortion is at risk, including 84% of Democrats, 67% of Independents, and 63% of Republicans.

Spotlight on Dan Lipinski, a “Democrat” in name only: Among the list of anti-choice lawmakers who signed onto the amicus brief is Dan Lipinski, an anti-choice Democrat representing Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District who aligns with Trump and refuses to stand up for fundamental values and key priorities such as reproductive freedom, the Affordable Care Act, and economic opportunity for every family. Lipinski signing onto this amicus brief is now the latest in a long list of reasons NARAL is working to unseat him and replace him with Marie Newman.
