Democratic Candidates Biden and Sanders Race to Showcase Who Best Supports Reproductive Freedom at Democratic Debate

As country watches eagerly for candidates’ leadership amidst national emergency, both candidates demonstrate that support for reproductive freedom is non-negotiable

NARAL President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement following Sunday night’s Democratic debate, where Democratic contenders Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden tussled over their support for reproductive freedom:

“We are proud that NARAL’s scorecard is seen as the gold standard for support for reproductive freedom. We know that our fundamental rights are under attack in unprecedented ways. Both candidates need to demonstrate their unequivocal commitment to Roe v. Wade and safeguarding abortion access. When Joe Biden fell short of that commitment, supporting the discriminatory Hyde Amendment, we pushed him along with our partners committed to reproductive justice. We will continue to push him to take a stronger stance. He must demonstrate that he will prioritize the critical issue of reproductive freedom as president. Similarly, when Bernie Sanders backed an anti-choice Democratic candidate, we held him to account. Bernie Sanders recently released a revamped plan on reproductive rights and we encourage Joe Biden to quickly follow suit. Given how much is at stake, voters need to see bold and concrete plans on where the candidates stand on reproductive freedom.”
