Theresa Greenfield won today’s U.S. Senate primary in Iowa and will now face off against anti-choice incumbent Republican Senator Joni Ernst in the November general election. In response to Greenfield’s primary victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“The country is in turmoil in this moment, and part of the pathway forward is to send people to Washington in November who lead with compassion and honor human dignity in all aspects of their work. Theresa Greenfield is that person. Among other fights for justice, the fate of Roe v. Wade and the right for women to make decisions about their own pregnancies will be decided in November, and regaining a majority in the U.S. Senate that supports reproductive freedom is a critical step forward to protect women and families. Joni Ernst has failed the people of Iowa for too long, serving as a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s extreme agenda. She voted to confirm dozens of judges hostile to Roe, civil rights, and — in many cases — progress of any kind to the federal judiciary. She voted to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, where our rights hang in the balance. Theresa Greenfield is the fighter we need to replace Ernst and truly represent Iowans’ values. NARAL congratulates her on her decisive primary victory and looks forward to sending another champion for reproductive freedom to the Senate.”
