Yesterday, Dr. Hiral Tipirneni won the Democratic primary in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District and will now face off against anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican incumbent David Schweikert.

In response to Dr. Tipirneni’s primary victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America Southwest Regional Director Caroline Mello Roberson released the following statement:

“NARAL and our 45,000 members in Arizona congratulate Dr. Hiral Tipirneni on her primary victory. We are proud to support a candidate who is unwavering in her commitment to upholding Arizonans’ values. Dr. Tipirneni is well poised to unseat Rep. Schweikert, who has a track record of corruption and a commitment to pushing an extreme, out-of-touch ideological agenda in lockstep with Donald Trump and in opposition to the beliefs of Arizona voters, who support reproductive freedom and want to ensure abortion remains legal in the state. The people of Arizona deserve better. In addition to grappling with an unprecedented pandemic, the fate of Roe v. Wade and reproductive freedom hang in the balance. In these times of crisis, Dr. Tipirneni’s leadership and expertise are both necessary and overdue. We look forward to sending her to Congress this November.”

Dr. Tipirneni is an emergency room physician, cancer research advocate, and member of the Board of Directors of the Maricopa Health Foundation. As a doctor, Dr. Tipirneni understands the importance of evidence-based healthcare and grounding decisions in data, plus ensuring access to the full range of reproductive healthcare, including contraception and abortion care.

Tipirneni’s opponent, anti-freedom incumbent Republican Rep. David Schweikert, has consistently earned a 0% score from NARAL in the Congressional Record on Choice, and in 2019 signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to consider overturning Roe v. Wade.

Arizona has some of the most severe restrictions on reproductive freedom in the United States, which include interrogating people about why they’re ending a pregnancy, forcing delays before a person can receive abortion care, and subjecting patients to mandatory biased counseling. Last month, NARAL unveiled the Roadmap to Reproductive Freedom in Arizona, which outlines three critical policy priorities for safeguarding and expanding access to abortion in the state.
