Washington, DC  Just one day remains until polls close for the 2020 election, and already a record-breaking number of people across the country have made their voices heard through early voting. It’s clear that voters recognize how much is on the line in this year’s elections and are turning out en masse to make their voices heard.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement ahead of Election Day:

“This country has suffered tremendous losses over the last four years—losses of freedom, rights, and advances that are the product of hard-fought battles for a nation that works for all people. But maybe the most significant loss under this president is the loss of a sense of compassion for our shared humanity. Voters have spoken in record numbers already this year. The central part of the message they are sending is that we need leadership that respects women and holds our personal decision making and our healthcare as inalienable rights that are inherent to our equality. That standing up for reproductive freedom is both the right thing to do and the thing to do to be on the right side of politics and history. NARAL Pro-Choice America is so proud to have run the largest electoral program in our history to amplify the voices of the vast majority of Americans who support the right to abortion. NARAL and our 2.5 million members will never give up our fight to make reproductive freedom a reality for every body.”

There’s no question that the Republican Party’s agenda of rolling back social progress and gutting Roe is unpopular with voters, including suburban women voters. Recent polling from the Pew Research Center polling found that 74% of suburban women oppose overturning Roe v. WadeAnd in the key state of Georgia, recent polling by Change Research and NARAL Pro-Choice America found that suburban women voters in the state strongly support reproductive freedom: 78% oppose making abortion illegal and turning back the clock to the days before Roe v. Wade.

This election will hinge on voters who support reproductive freedom but don’t consistently turn out to vote, as well as these suburban women. That’s why anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican politicians have spent the last several weeks running from their party’s extreme platform of criminalizing abortion and dodging the agenda they expect Amy Barrett to carry out on the U.S. Supreme Court now that they’ve jammed through her confirmation.

But the writing is on the wall: Barrett’s sham confirmation to our nation’s highest court puts reproductive freedom on the line like never before. There will be a political price to pay for putting our fundamental rights in danger by rubber-stamping Trump’s extreme agenda.

NARAL’s 2020 Electoral Program:

Recognizing how much is on the line, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever political program in 2020. Knowing that the Trump administration and the president’s cronies have waged war on our fundamental rights and our democracy, NARAL focused on flipping the Senate, expanding the reproductive freedom majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and sending Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris to the White House. Key to NARAL’s strategy has been reaching, persuading, and mobilizing critical voter segments including soft-partisan persuadable women voters, and low-propensity, reproductive freedom voters motivated by Trump and Republicans’ commitment to ending Roe, criminalizing abortion, and punishing women.

In the final stretch of the election season, NARAL ramped up its GOTV efforts to reach critical voters launching GOTV tactics in the key U.S. Senate battleground states of Arizona, Iowa, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, and North Carolina. Last week, NARAL ramped up ad efforts in the key states of Michigan and Georgia to mobilize critical voters to turn out for reproductive freedom champions. And in the key states of Georgia, Arizona, and Iowa alone, NARAL Freedom Fund has spent $1,833,000 and reached out to over 976,000 voters through mail and texts this cycle.

Since the start of the year, NARAL organizers have led more than 400 voter contact events with a total of 2,330 volunteer shifts completed, over 1 million texts, 64,000 postcards, and more than 813,000 calls. Since Labor Day, NARAL organizers have led more than 147 voter contact events with a total of 1,511 volunteer shifts completed, 838,794 texts, 64,000 postcards, and more than 100,000 calls.

NARAL also recently launched ads to combat disinformation surrounding voting. In Michigan, NARAL partnered with Detroit Action and Rising Voices of Asian American Families to release an ad centered around election oversight. NARAL partnered with Higher Heights Leadership fund in Georgia to launch an ad educating voters on the security of their ballot. In Arizona, NARAL launched two ads in partnership with Poder in Action: a Spanish language ad and a bilingual ad that aim to convey the ease of voting-by-mail and emphasize the impact that every vote has on this election.
