Defeat of anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican challenger David Young is a win for Iowans and reproductive freedom

Iowa Yesterday, voters in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District reelected NARAL-endorsed incumbent Rep. Cindy Axne to the U.S. House of Representatives. Axne’s victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican challenger David Young marks a huge win for reproductive freedom and maintains a critical seat in the U.S. House.

In response to Axne’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“Congresswoman Cindy Axne has been an amazing champion for reproductive freedom in her first term, and we’re thrilled to be sending her back for another term. Rep. Axne knows that it’s imperative for Iowa families to fight to maintain personal decision making in abortion and reproductive healthcare. Further, Cindy Axne brings the compassion and humanity to the office that is so often sorely lacking across the aisle. Iowa and America is lucky to have her.”

NARAL endorsed Axne as part of its largest-ever electoral program. NARAL reached over 3 million voters in key states, including Iowa, as part of its historic 2020 electoral program.

NARAL Pro-Choice Iowa focused its efforts earlier this year to combat bills to restrict reproductive freedom in the Iowa legislature and elect reproductive freedom champions to the legislature. NARAL held fireside chats, meet-and-greet events, phone banks, and postcard-writing parties for these candidates as well as Iowa candidates for the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.

NARAL’s Iowa electoral program included NARAL staff and volunteers making more than 70,000 calls to voters, and reaching nearly 3,000 voters as part of NARAL’s direct mail program. NARAL also held 25 events, activating 250 volunteers who not only made thousands/tens of thousands of calls, but also sent 118,000 text messages, and 600 postcards. NARAL Freedom Fund invested $265,000 in Iowa, resulting in nearly 2 million digital impressions, nearly 85,000 texts sent, and nearly 70,000 voters reached by mail.

Recent polling found that a strong majority (70%) of Iowa voters believe that abortion should be legal, and that the government should not prevent a woman from making that decision for herself. Key to NARAL’s 2020 strategy was activating its more than 25,000 members statewide to reach, persuade, and mobilize Iowans who were motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.

During her time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Axne has earned a 100% from NARAL on its Congressional Record on Choice.
