Defeat of anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican candidate Jason Lewis is a win for Minnesotans and reproductive freedom

Minnesota Yesterday, voters in Minnesota reelected NARAL-endorsed Senator Tina Smith to the U.S. Senate. Sen. Smith’s victory over anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican Jason Lewis marks a huge win for reproductive freedom and maintains a critical seat in the U.S. Senate.

In response to Sen. Smith’s victory, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“We are proud to have endorsed Sen. Smith, a proven champion for reproductive freedom, and congratulate her on winning this critical race. We know that Sen. Smith will continue to be a fierce defender of our fundamental rights in the Senate—and we need elected officials like her now more than ever.”

NARAL endorsed Sen. Smith as part of its largest-ever electoral program designed to hold anti-choice, anti-freedom lawmakers accountable for rubber-stamping Donald Trump’s extreme ideological agenda. NARAL held fireside chats, meet-and-greet events, phone banks, and postcard-writing parties for Sen. Smith as well as Minnesota candidates for the U.S. House and state legislature.

Through its “Battleground Midwest: Voter Activation Alerts” program, NARAL reached 3,000 Minnesotans to highlight Republican candidate Jason Lewis’ egregious anti-choice record. NARAL’s Minnesota electoral program included NARAL staff and volunteers making 25,000 calls to voters. NARAL also held 15 events, activating 200 volunteers who not only made tens of thousands of calls, but also sent 56,000 text messages, and 5,700 postcards.
