New Mexico Yesterday, NARAL-endorsed Rep. Xochitl Torres Small narrowly lost her bid for reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response:

“Rep. Xochitl Torres Small ran an admirable race, and while we’re disappointed in the results, we’re grateful for all of Rep. Torres Small’s work to protect and expand reproductive freedom during her time serving in the House of Representatives. There’s no doubt that Yvette Herrell’s anti-choice, anti-freedom views are wildly out of step with the vast majority of Americans who support the legal right to abortion. The stakes are higher than ever, and NARAL Pro-Choice American and our 2.5 million members will never stop fighting to defeat politicians like Yvette Herrell who work to interfere with personal decisions about our lives, families, and futures.”

In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.

New Mexico still has a dangerous pre-Roe abortion ban that is currently unconstitutonal and unenforceable, but has not been repealed. If Roe were to be overturned, the ban would allow for abortion only in a very limited number of cases, such as for survivors of rape or incest. With Roe in the crosshairs, the stakes for women and families in New Mexico are higher than ever.
