Arizona On Tuesday, NARAL-endorsed candidate Dr. Hiral Tipirneni narrowly lost her bid for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response:

“Though we’re disappointed in today’s results, NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to have backed Dr. Hiral Tipirneni in her bid to unseat Rep. David Schweikert. Over the course of this race, Dr. Tipirneni recognized exactly what was at stake for women and families when it comes to reproductive freedom, and she vocally championed our fundamental rights. Make no mistake: Though this race may be over, NARAL will never stop fighting to defeat anti-choice, anti-freedom politicians like David Schweikert. We will be watching Rep. Schweikert, and will continue to hold him accountable for his out-of-touch agenda.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America Southwest Regional Director Caroline Mello Roberson said:

“We couldn’t be more proud to have supported Dr. Hiral Tipirneni, a proven leader in the fight for reproductive freedom, in this race. NARAL and our more than 52,000 members across Arizona are committed to this movement, and our momentum won’t be diminished by Rep. Schweikert’s attacks on our fundamental rights.”

Anti-choice, anti-freedom Republican incumbent Rep. David Schweikert has earned a 0% score from NARAL in the Congressional Record on Choice. His extreme opposition to reproductive freedom is wildly out-of-touch with the strong majority (76%) of Arizona voters who believe that abortion should be legal, and that the government should not prevent a woman from making that decision for herself.

In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans’ unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.

Arizona has some of the most severe restrictions on reproductive freedom in the United States, which include interrogating people about why they’re ending a pregnancy, forcing delays before a person can receive abortion care, and subjecting patients to mandatory biased counseling. These restrictions disproportionately harm BIPOC, low-income, and rural communities, and are part of a coordinated effort by the Radical Right to maintain white patriarchal control at all costs.
