Washington, DC — After yesterday’s heinous attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of violent pro-Trump white supremacists hell-bent on overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election, NARAL Pro-Choice America is calling for real accountability and action to uphold our democracy and ensure this never happens again. The results of the election were crystal-clear: Americans decisively voted for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and these insurrectionists want to undo the election to boost Trump at the expense of the very foundation of our democracy.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement today:
“Yesterday was a dark day in our nation’s history that must never be forgotten and must never be allowed to happen again. The events at the U.S. Capitol were an unconscionable attack on every single one of us, including our elected officials, members of the media, and our very democracy. This is the extension of decades of extremism from the anti-choice, anti-freedom movement, determined to do everything possible to halt social progress and maintain white patriarchal control.
Every elected official who played a part in fomenting white supremacy and this violent assault on our democracy should be expelled from office. They were party to treason. That includes Donald Trump who has spent the last four years spouting inflammatory and dangerous lies. He bears the greatest share of the responsibility for the violence perpetrated yesterday and should be immediately removed from office.”
For over 50 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters have fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom—including access to abortion, contraception, and paid family leave—for every body. NARAL is powered by its more than 2.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 7 in 10 Americans who believe every person should have the freedom to make the best decision for themselves about if, when, and how to raise a family.
