NARAL Pro-Choice America Applauds Selection of Sen. Gary Peters as DSCC Chair

Michigan Today, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced he has selected Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) to lead the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), the U.S. Senate fundraising arm of the Democratic party.

In response to this news, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“We applaud Leader Schumer’s pick of Senator Peters to chair the DSCC. Sen. Peters is a proven fighter who knows how critical it is that the Democratic party champion reproductive freedom. During his race for reelection, Sen. Peters made clear that reproductive freedom is both personal and non-negotiable. The voters responded, not only bringing home victory in a tight race but giving Sen. Peters the single best fundraising day of his campaign. Voters want to put their money where their values are, and Sen. Peters is an expert at centering the values of America’s majority for reproductive freedom. NARAL is proud to have backed Sen. Peters in his reelection bid and looks forward to working with him closely in his new role. ”

In the lead-up to his reelection, Sen. Peters shared his family’s abortion story with Elle, becoming the first sitting senator to share a personal abortion story publicly. This came after he first shared the story with NARAL advocates and volunteers. Bravely sharing his story fueled Sen. Peters’ reelection. His campaign had its best fundraising day of the cycle following the Elle article’s release. NARAL Pro-Choice America Freedom Fund boosted this article to key voter groups in Michigan.

NARAL endorsed Sen. Peters as part of its largest-ever electoral program. NARAL reached over 3 million voters in key states, including Michigan, through its historic 2020 electoral program. NARAL Freedom Fund invested $185,000 in Michigan, running a major ad campaign to boost Sen. Peters’s reelection campaign in the final weeks of the election.
