NARAL Pro-Choice America Launches New Video Calling Out the Anti-Choice Movement’s Voter Suppression Efforts

Washington, DC Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America launched a new video, in both English and Spanish, highlighting how the anti-choice movement has adopted voter suppression as a central component of its attacks on reproductive freedom. The video comes as Texas Democrats blocked some of the country’s strictest voter suppression legislation on Sunday by walking out of the Texas House.

NARAL Pro-Choice America Acting President Adrienne Kimmell said:

“Anti-choice extremists and Republican state legislators are dismantling our democracy, all while upholding and promoting white supremacy by stripping the core freedom of voting from Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and all people of color; and from all Americans. NARAL will continue to expose the Right’s nefarious tactics and work to ensure that our democracy facilitates participation for every body, so we can exercise our right to elect leaders who represent our values. We need leaders who will safeguard our freedom to make our own decisions about our families and futures, especially for communities of color, for whom this has not been a reality.”

It’s no coincidence that the same state legislators attacking voting rights also support extreme restrictions on reproductive freedom and abortion access. Last month, Republican Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed into law a bill that could purge tens of thousands of Arizonan voters off of early mail-in voting lists. Arizona has also seen more than 10 anti-choice bills introduced this year and passed an extreme abortion ban. In March, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed into law legislation designed to severely restrict voting in Georgia and disenfranchise Black voters and other voters of color, who already face the greatest barriers to the ballot box.

Making this connection between anti-choice laws and voter suppression all the more glaring is the partnership between extreme anti-choice organization Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List and American Principles Project. These notorious anti-choice, anti-freedom groups are waging a $5 million campaign to attack the freedom to vote in the states. They even said the quiet part loud in their announcement, calling HR 1, “The For The People Act,” part of a “pro-abortion Democrat agenda.” This campaign is part of a multi-state effort by SBA List and other extremists to disenfranchise voters and lock in minority control at the state level.
