NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorses Sen. Maggie Hassan for Reelection to the U.S. Senate for New Hampshire

Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH) for reelection to the U.S. Senate in the 2022 election.
NARAL Pro-Choice America Acting President Adrienne Kimmell released the following statement:
“NARAL is proud to support Senator Hassan in her bid for reelection. During her time in the Senate, Sen. Hassan has worked to advance reproductive freedom and fought back against unyielding anti-choice attacks. We know she will take bold action to make sure every body in the Granite state and across the country has the freedom to make important decisions about their health, lives, families, and futures.”
Senator Maggie Hassan released the following statement:
“Granite Staters are more than capable of making their own health decisions — without anti-choice politicians interfering. At a time when Roe is under threat, I am proud to have the support of NARAL as we work to protect reproductive freedom and Granite Staters’ constitutional right to make their own health care choices.”
Senator Hassan was a fierce leader in the fight for reproductive freedom during her time as governor of New Hampshire and has been unwavering in her commitment to advancing reproductive freedom as a senator, earning a 100% score in NARAL’s Congressional Record on Reproductive Freedom every year she has served in the U.S. Senate.
Sen. Hassan has consistently worked to advance reproductive freedom by cosponsoring key legislation, including:
- The Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would protect the right to abortion throughout the United States by creating a right for healthcare providers to provide abortion care and a corresponding right for people to receive that care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions.
- The Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act, championed by the reproductive justice advocates at All* Above All. The EACH Act would ensure that federal health plans and programs cover and provide access to abortion care by lifting existing coverage bans for those who receive their care or health insurance through the federal government. The bill would also prohibit the federal government from interfering with the private insurance market to prevent insurance companies from providing abortion coverage.
- The Global Health, Empowerment and Rights (HER) Act, which would permanently end the anti-choice global gag rule that denies certain kinds of foreign aid to overseas health centers unless they agree not to use their own, non-U.S. funds for abortion services, counseling, or even to take a public position in support of reproductive freedom.
- Sen. Hassan has also led efforts to increase funding to the Title X family planning program, the only federal funding program dedicated solely to providing family planning services in the United States.
This endorsement comes as reproductive freedom is under unprecedented attack. The U.S. Supreme Court will soon hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the first direct challenge to Roe v. Wade since the confirmation of the court’s anti-choice supermajority. Anti-choice, anti-freedom lawmakers have ramped up their attacks on abortion access in hopes of ultimately overturning Roe. So far in 2021, anti-choice state lawmakers have already introduced, advanced, or passed more than 330 bills attacking abortion access
This year, states have enacted over 90 restrictions on abortion. This includes a bill signed into law by New Hampshire’s anti-choice Republican Governor Chris Sununu attacking reproductive freedom and banning abortion care. This bill mandates ultrasounds for anyone seeking abortion care, bans abortion later in pregnancy with no exceptions for rape, incest, fetal diagnosis, or the health of the pregnant person, and threatens doctors who provide abortion care with jail time. These restrictions disproportionately push access out of reach for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and people of color; LGBTQ people; those with low incomes; and others who face systemic barriers to care.
