Nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group endorses incumbent Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock of Georgia

Washington, DC Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) for reelection to the U.S. Senate in the 2022 election.

NARAL Pro-Choice America Acting President Adrienne Kimmell released the following statement:

“With the Supreme Court set to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, case this fall and Texas’ blatantly unconstitutional abortion ban in effect, there is no doubt that Roe v. Wade and access to abortion care are on the line.

NARAL was proud to endorse Senator Reverend Warnock in his historic victory to unseat an anti-choice extremist and secure Democratic control of the Senate. We, and our 54,000 members across Georgia, are excited to support him again in the 2022 midterms. As a Baptist minister and a lifelong advocate for reproductive freedom, Sen. Rev. Warnock has consistently stood up for our fundamental rights and taken bold action. We are confident that he will continue to fight to make sure that every body in Georgia and across the country has the freedom to make their own decisions about their health, lives, families, and futures.”

Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock released the following statement:

“I’m proud to stand with NARAL and so many Georgians in the urgent fight for reproductive freedom and justice. As a proud pro-choice pastor, I fundamentally believe that health care is a human right and that decisions about pregnancy should be made between a patient and their provider. We’re at a moment in which this fundamental right is under unprecedented attack, and I’m grateful to have NARAL’s endorsement as I continue fighting on behalf of all Georgians in the U.S. Senate to ensure they have access to the health care they need, including reproductive health care.”

Sen. Rev. Warnock powerfully draws on his faith to champion reproductive freedom. He is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would protect the right to abortion throughout the United States by creating a right for healthcare providers to provide abortion care and a corresponding right for people to receive that care, free from medically unnecessary restrictions.

In Sen. Rev. Warnock’s special election, NARAL and its volunteer leaders held 20 voter mobilization events, made more than 164,000 calls, sent nearly 100,000 texts, and emailed more than 20,000 Georgia voters. NARAL plans to mount another strong field operation for Sen. Rev. Warnock’s reelection to the U.S. Senate.

Listening to leaders like Stacey Abrams and recognizing the power and necessity of real on-the-ground investments, NARAL Pro-Choice America launched its Georgia chapter in 2017 to help build the progressive momentum and infrastructure necessary to make Georgia a key battleground state. NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia spent years working alongside other in-state groups to lay the foundation to help flip Georgia blue, mobilizing tens of thousands of voters to turn out for candidates like Sen. Rev. Warnock, who champion reproductive freedom.

This endorsement comes as reproductive freedom is in peril like never before. The U.S. Supreme Court will soon hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the first direct challenge to Roe v. Wade since the confirmation of the Court’s anti-choice supermajority.

Anti-choice, anti-freedom lawmakers have ramped up their attacks on abortion access in hopes of ultimately overturning Roe. So far in 2021, anti-choice state lawmakers have already introduced, advanced, or passed more than 330 bills attacking abortion access. This year, states have enacted over 90 restrictions on abortion. These restrictions disproportionately push access out of reach for Black and brown people, Indigenous people, and other people of color; LGBTQ people; those with low incomes; and others who face systemic barriers to care.
