Washington, DC Today, in response to Texas’ abortion ban (SB 8) and as part of President Biden’s whole-of-government response, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that it will allocate additional Title X family planning funds to providers and take key actions including enforcement of nondiscrimination protections for providers and enforcement of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which outlines providers’ legal obligations to patients seeking care.

NARAL Pro-Choice America Chief Campaign and Advocacy Officer Christian LoBue released the following statement:

“We applaud Secretary Becerra and the Department of Health and Human Services for taking critical steps to fight back against Texas’ draconian ban on abortion and support patients and providers. Texas’ SB 8 has effectively shut off access to abortion care in the stateand this law most acutely harms those who already face the greatest barriers to accessing care.

This moment of crisis for reproductive freedom calls for bold and swift action. We look forward to continuing to work with the Biden administration to ensure that abortion access is restored in Texasincluding by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act to safeguard access to abortion care across the country and ensure every body, no matter where they live, has access to the care they need.”
