NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorses Cheri Beasley for Election to the U.S. Senate

Former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley earns endorsement of nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group
Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of former North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley in her 2022 bid to become North Carolina’s next U.S. Senator. Beasley has held numerous judicial positions in North Carolina, most recently serving as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

“NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to stand with Cheri Beasley in her historic bid to become North Carolina’s first Black U.S. Senator. Cheri Beasley, a woman of many firsts, has already made history as the first Black woman to win a statewide election in North Carolina and the first Black woman to serve as Chief Justice on the state Supreme Court. She has fought for the fundamental freedoms of the people of North Carolina for over two decades and we know she will bring that same commitment to the Senate. NARAL could not be more proud to endorse Cheri Beasley, and we look forward to working with her to protect and advance reproductive freedom.”
Cheri Beasley released the following statement:
“As reproductive freedom is under attack across the country, it’s more important than ever to have a Senator in Washington who will stand up for our fundamental rights. I am proud to earn the endorsement of NARAL and in the Senate, I will fight every day to protect reproductive rights and ensure North Carolinians can get the care they deserve.”
Cheri Beasley has voiced her support for the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which would provide a right for healthcare providers to provide abortion care and a corresponding right for people to receive that care, free from bans and medically unnecessary restrictions that single out abortion and block access. She is also committed to ending the anti-choice Hyde Amendment’s discriminatory ban on coverage of abortion care for those who receive their health insurance through government-administered healthcare programs.
The fight for reproductive freedom faces a pivotal moment. With the anti-choice supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court considering a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case regarding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, it has never been more important to elect leaders who will fight for reproductive freedom. If Roe fell tomorrow, 28 states—including a majority of those that neighbor North Carolina—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. Of those, 12 states already have “trigger bans” in place, which would ban abortion automatically if Roe is overturned. The people hurt most by attacks on reproductive freedom are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; LGBTQ+ people; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
