NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorses Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) for Reelection to the U.S. Senate

Sen. Kelly earns endorsement of nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group

Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of U.S. Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) in his bid for reelection to the U.S. Senate. Sen. Kelly has represented Arizona in the Senate since 2020.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju said:

“NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse Senator Mark Kelly for reelection to continue representing Arizonans in the U.S. Senate. He has consistently advocated for reproductive freedom and fought back against restrictions on abortion access. With the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court poised to end Roe v. Wade and reproductive freedom under attack across the country like never before, it is imperative to have leaders like Sen. Kelly in Congress. He is the leader Arizona needs to protect and expand access to abortion and fight for the 9 in 10 Arizonans who know that each of us should have the freedom to decide if, when, and how to start or grow a family, free from political interference.”

Senator Mark Kelly said:

“Throughout my time in the Senate, I’ve championed efforts to write Roe v. Wade into law, protecting Arizonans’ right to an abortion. And right now, that work has never been more important. The idea that my granddaughter might grow up having fewer rights than my grandmother is unacceptable. I’m grateful to have the support of NARAL in this fight.”

During his time in the Senate, Sen. Kelly has been a leader in the fight for reproductive freedom, earning a 100% on NARAL’s Congressional Record on Reproductive Freedom. Sen. Kelly is a cosponsor of critical legislation to protect and expand reproductive freedom, including the  Women’s Health Protection Act and the Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights (HER) Act.

Today’s endorsement comes as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL recently announced a partnership with Planned Parenthood Action Fund and EMILY’s List to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot across the country.

In the coming weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recently leaked draft majority opinion in the case indicates that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it. If the landmark abortion rights decision is undone, 28 states—including Arizona—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. If Roe is overturned and states move swiftly to ban abortion, women of reproductive age in Arizona are predicted to see a 2,175% increase in driving distance when seeking abortion care.
