State Rep. Ramirez earns endorsement of nation’s leading reproductive freedom advocacy group

Washington, DC — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced its endorsement of State Representative Delia Ramirez in her bid to represent Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. State Rep. Ramirez is running to fill a vacancy left by congressional redistricting.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju said:

NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse State Representative Delia Ramirez to represent the people of Illinois in Congress. She has consistently advocated for reproductive freedom in the state House, fought back against restrictions on abortion access, and pushed hard to expand access in the state—cosponsoring legislation to protect our most fundamental freedom. With the Supreme Court’s anti-choice supermajority poised to potentially end Roe v. Wade in the coming weeks, it is more critical than ever that we elect leaders like state Rep. Ramirez, who will fight for our freedom to decide if, when, and how to start or grow our families.

State Representative Delia Ramirez, candidate for Congress, said:

“It is an honor to earn the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America. NARAL has led the fight for abortion rights with an understanding that bodily autonomy is undoubtedly linked to economic security and freedom—and I cannot agree more. Our country is at a crossroads when it comes to reproductive rights. We must fight like never before to ensure that abortions remain legal and safe for everyone. I have an unwavering commitment to do that once elected to Congress, and I am proud to join NARAL in that resolve.”

State Rep. Ramirez, the first Guatemalan American to be elected to the Illinois State Legislature, has consistently voted to expand abortion access. State Rep. Ramirez cosponsored legislation to protect the right to abortion and expand access into Illinois state law and worked to repeal the state’s parental notification requirements. She is also committed to ending the anti-choice Hyde Amendment’s discriminatory ban on coverage of abortion care for those who receive their health insurance through government-administered healthcare programs.

NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY’s List recently announced a partnership to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions across the country. Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recent leak of the Court’s draft majority opinion confirmed that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it

In the coming weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will rule in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recently leaked draft majority opinion in the case indicates that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it. If the landmark abortion rights decision is undone, 28 states—including all six states which border Illinois—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. In this case, Illinois is predicted to see an 8,651% increase in women of reproductive age whose nearest abortion provider would be in the Prairie State.
