Washington, DC Today, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in to the U.S. Supreme Court. An experienced and highly-qualified jurist and attorney who spent much of her career working to achieve civil rights and justice, Justice Jackson takes the judicial oath as Justice Stephen Breyer ends his tenure on the Court. Justice Jackson is the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“We are thrilled to celebrate Justice Jackson as she is sworn in to the Supreme Court. As our country reels from the devastating impact of the Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Justice Jackson’s commitment to standing up for our fundamental rights gives us hope that we will have a fierce defender of reproductive freedom for decades to come. We are confident that Justice Jackson will continue to advance justice, equity, and freedom as she has repeatedly done throughout her distinguished career.”

During her confirmation process, NARAL proudly supported Justice Jackson and our members came out in full force to urge their senators to swiftly confirm her. NARAL worked alongside partners—including the Black Women’s Leadership Collective—to combat racist and sexist disinformation campaigns launched in an attempt to derail her confirmation.

Justice Jackson is being sworn in as reproductive freedom faces a crisis like never before. On Friday, the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, ending the constitutional right to abortion and upholding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. Although Justice Jackson’s vote could not have changed the outcome of the anti-choice supermajority’s opinion in this case, her confirmation will shape the Court in the decades to come.
