Washington, DC Today, the U.S. House of Representatives, led by House Democrats, passed the Right to Contraception Act by a vote of 228-195. It now moves to the Senate. This legislation would protect the right to contraception throughout the United States at a time when extremist lawmakers in multiple states are enforcing total bans on abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“While we applaud the passage of this bill, Americans should be outraged that we have to act to protect access to contraception in the first place. It’s reprehensible that this bill didn’t pass with unanimous support. It’s clear that the House Republicans who refused to back this bill couldn’t care less about the health and well-being of the constituents they’re supposed to be working for.”

Last month, the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In a concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the Court should reconsider the Supreme Court precedent that guaranteed the right to contraception. Some anti-choice lawmakers have refused to rule out the possibility of banning some forms of contraception in their state even though the public overwhelmingly supports access to contraception. These lawmakers have peddled misinformation to make the case for their latest intrusion into Americans’ private lives. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
