NARAL Pro-Choice America Condemns Indiana Legislature for Passing Total Abortion Ban

Indiana has the shameful distinction of being the first state to call a special session to ban abortion following the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade

Washington, DC Today, the anti-choice majority in the Indiana Legislature passed a draconian total ban on abortion through both chambers. The bill now goes to Republican Governor Eric Holcomb. Indiana was the first state to call a special session in order to ban abortion in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. New polling shows that 71% of Hoosiers say it is important to them that people in their state have access to all reproductive health care options, including abortion.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“The extremist lawmakers who forced this bill through a special session clearly could not care less about what their constituents want or need. It’s appalling that they’re going to these lengths to block people from accessing abortion care, and they should be ashamed of themselves. Governor Holcomb has a chance to veto this legislation and protect reproductive freedom for millions of Hoosiers—he should take it. NARAL Pro-Choice America and our over 63,000 members in the state will be watching.”

In June, the anti-choice supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the legal right to abortion in our country as we know it. Right now, roughly half of the states in the country are at risk of banning abortion. Of those, 14 are in place, and many others are pushing to do the same.

Governor Eric Holcomb has consistently put his own extreme and out-of-touch ideology above the needs of his constituents. In 2020, Holcomb was one of several Republican governors to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to attack reproductive freedom and ban abortion. He also signed a 2018 law that would have burdened those who have an abortion and medical providers with invasive and unnecessary reporting requirements, which was struck down by a federal judge who ruled it unconstitutional.
