NARAL Pro-Choice America Endorses Former Governor Charlie Crist for Governor of Florida
Washington, DC —Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America endorsed reproductive freedom leader and former Gov. Charlie Crist for Florida governor. In this highly contested election, former Gov. Crist has shown an unshakable dedication to preserving the right to abortion, and the stakes could not be higher as he challenges anti-choice extremist Governor Ron DeSantis.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“If Gov. Ron DeSantis wins this November, he will do all that he can to completely ban abortion in Florida. Reproductive freedom is on the ballot this November, and Floridians deserve a proven leader like Charlie Crist who will safeguard and restore their fundamental rights. It’s time to hold MAGA extremists like Gov. DeSantis accountable, and we’ll be working alongside our members until Election Day to make it happen.”
Former Governor Charlie Crist released the following statement:
“I’m honored to earn the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America as we work to defeat Ron DeSantis and fight for abortion access all across the Sunshine State. Make no mistake, women’s rights and reproductive freedoms are on the
ballot in November. That’s why on day one as governor, I will sign an executive order protecting a woman’s right to choose and will fight like hell to protect reproductive freedom every single day.”
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—ending the constitutional right to abortion and opening the door for extremist state lawmakers to put total bans on abortion in place. This decision is already having a devastating impact throughout the country as 15 states are currently enforcing extreme or total bans on abortion. The people hurt most by attacks on reproductive freedom are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
These endorsements come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot in Florida during this critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom. Last month, NARAL launched the final phase of our “Fight Back for Freedom” electoral program, powered by our 4 million-member strong grassroots movement. NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and EMILY’s List announced a partnership in May to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom leaders up and down the ballot across the country.
