Washington, DC — Today, the Democratic Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives elected a new generation of leaders. Following the leadership elections, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will serve as Democratic Leader, Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) as Democratic Whip, and Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) as Caucus Chair in the next Congress.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“The American people need the bold leadership of Reps. Jeffries, Clark, and Aguilar at this pivotal juncture in our fight for reproductive freedom, and we know that this trio will captain the Caucus with an unwavering commitment to the right to abortion. With the first Black congressperson elected to lead either chamber, this is also a historic step forward. With gratitude to Speaker Pelosi, Leader Hoyer, and Whip Clyburn, we congratulate this new generation of leadership and look forward to working with them to ensure reproductive freedom for everybody.”
For over 50 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for every body. NARAL is powered by its 4 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
