Raleigh, NC — Today, the North Carolina State Legislature passed an extreme ban on abortion at 12 weeks of pregnancy (SB 20). The bill now goes to Governor Roy Cooper, who has indicated that he intends to veto it. However, the makeup of the legislature will allow them to override Gov. Cooper’s veto. Should this ban go into effect, it would continue to decimate access to abortion care in the Southeast, where states throughout the region are also currently enforcing extreme bans.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“Anti-abortion extremists in North Carolina are racing to attack our most fundamental freedoms—this time with a ban on abortion that further decimates access in the Southeast. They’ve done so without hearing from experts or members of the public, all because they know they can get away with it. There is an anti-abortion veto-proof majority in the state, allowing them to disregard their constituents, disregard their dignity, and disregard our democracy. This brazen act of cowardice only further shows that the anti-abortion movement does not have public opinion on their side, so they resort to cheap tricks in order to push their dangerous agenda.”
