The mission of NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota is a not-for-profit membership organization governed by an elected volunteer board of directors. Organizational programming includes:
- Grassroots Organizing
- Education, Training and Community Outreach
- Policy and Education Initiatives
The need for accurate information concerning women’s reproductive health care continues to be critical in South Dakota. The NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota Foundation has maintained the same mission since its inception, to be an information and referral source for women seeking abortion services, while offering reproductive freedom education and skills training opportunities through workshops, speakers and film screenings.
In 2016, the NARAL Pro-Choice South Dakota Foundation implemented its first blind field canvass, in an effort to start a conversation with constituents about TRAP laws, the Supreme Court case Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, and choice. The canvass was wildly successful, and we plan to include canvassing in our future strategic planning as a means to have an open dialogue with South Dakota residents about choice. The Foundation relies on grassroots activism more than it has before, through tactics like canvassing and increased social media and online presence.
