NARAL Pro-Choice America believes that there can be no reproductive freedom without freedom from tyranny and oppression. We believe unequivocally that Black lives matter, which is why we stand in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives, with Black leaders in the reproductive and racial justice movements, and with the families of the untold number of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) whose lives have been taken by police brutality, racial violence, and entrenched racism.
State violence against Black and Brown people and communities is the result of systems of white supremacy. Racism is a public health crisis that makes it impossible to fully achieve freedom and equality. Racial injustice directly undermines the ability of BIPOC to decide whether, when, and how to have a child and the ability to parent safe and healthy children. We cannot be silent. We commit to work to dismantle white supremacy and affirm the inherent dignity of every human being. We will continue to do everything we can to tackle disparities in maternal mortality and access to abortion care and birth control and to help build systems that support parents to raise healthy children and allow every body to live their lives free from trauma and violence.
NARAL Pro-Choice America supports the demands of the Movement for Black Lives, including defunding the police and investing in Black communities, which are a response to hundreds of years of systemic oppression and the failure of reforms to address urgent needs and injustices. Budgets reflect our priorities. As such, the call to defund the police is also a call for investment in Black communities—in urgent needs that are currently underfunded, like access to healthcare, education, social services, and more. Through this investment, we can work to make sure every person, every parent, and every family is able to thrive.
