Emergency Contraception: An Important Contraceptive Option

Emergency contraception (EC), also known as the “morning-after” pill, can substantially reduce a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant when taken soon after sex. EC does not cause abortion; rather it prevents pregnancy.

Although EC has tremendous potential to help reduce unintended pregnancy, this years-long fight over its access likely has contributed to the fact that too few Americans are aware that contraceptive methods are available that can prevent pregnancy after sex or too few women have timely access to the medication.

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
