I am ecstatic that Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed as the first Black woman to the U.S. Supreme Court in a historic vote earlier this month. And I’m grateful to each and every NARAL member who helped make it possible. She will be a pillar for justice, equity, and freedom in the years to come, and her confirmation comes at a pivotal time in our fight for reproductive freedom.
It’s no secret that the anti-choice supermajority on the Court is poised to end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it in the coming weeks. Sadly, Judge Jackson’s confirmation will not impact the outcome of the case regarding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade and its protections. If Roe falls, anti-choice lawmakers in 28 states are likely to take action to prohibit abortion outright—blocking millions of Americans from accessing care in their own states.
Our work has never been more essential than it is at this moment. We are the majority—the 8 in 10 Americans who support the legal right to abortion—and it’s time we act like it. We’ve got to work around the clock to mobilize voters across the country to protect and elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot in the midterm elections this November. There’s too much at stake for the future of reproductive freedom, and it’s going to take every body to protect our fundamental rights.
In the lead-up to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic confirmation to the Supreme Court, NARAL’s Research team partnered with the Women’s Disinformation Defense Project to monitor and mobilize against racist and sexist narratives around her qualifications and record. Our work empowered our members to come out in force alongside the Black Women’s Leadership Collective to combat racist and sexist disinformation surrounding the first Black woman ever nominated to the Court and demand that the Senate swiftly confirm Judge Jackson as our next Supreme Court justice.
Now more than ever, we need reproductive freedom champions in Congress who will fight for our fundamental rights. That’s why we’re pulling out all the stops to help elect Jessica Cisneros to Congress in Texas. She’s facing a tough primary election against incumbent, anti-choice Democrat Henry Cuellar—so it’s time to come together and help mobilize voters in her district before the May 24th runoff election.
Join NARAL President Mini Timmaraju and other leaders in the progressive movement for the 9th annual Men for Choice (and the People Who Love Them) event in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, May 5 from 6:30 pm ET – 8:30 pm ET.
Volunteers power our fight for reproductive freedom and are the backbone of our movement. We couldn’t do it without you! From all of us at NARAL, THANK YOU!
Republican lawmakers in Kentucky voted to override a veto from Governor Andy Beshear (D) in order to enact an extreme anti-choice law. Though a federal district court has temporarily blocked this law, while in effect, it forced providers to stop providing abortion care in the state.
OKLAHOMA
Anti-choice Republican Governor Kevin Stitt signed into law a total abortion ban set to go into effect in August. If it goes into effect, it will effectively shut off access to abortion in the state. This is a shameless step towards what could be a terrifying new future for reproductive freedom in the country.
FLORIDA
Florida became the third state after Arizona and Kentucky to enact a 15-week ban on abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe.
THIS MOMENT IS CRITICAL
Anti-choice politicians across the country are racing to enact abortion bans like Mississippi’s. No matter what kind of ban, let’s be clear: They are all meant to take away people’s freedom to make their own decisions about pregnancy and parenthood and impose one-size-fits-all restrictions.
