Okay, we all love vacations. But what would you do for a free trip to Anchorage, Alaska? Answer a phone call from that unknown number that hits you up at 3 p.m. everyday without fail? Click a link that looks too good to be true on your favorite website?
Well, Alaska State Representative David Eastman thinks that women are so desperate to get out of town for a bit that they are getting pregnant and seeking out abortion care just to con their way into a free trip to Anchorage. Apparently he doesn’t care that women across the country lose their jobs and suffer and even die because of dangerous laws that make it harder to access abortion care than it is to drive a semi across the frozen tundra for TV.
Don’t just take our word for it, though. Here it is straight from his own mouth: “You have individuals who are in villages and are glad to be pregnant, so that they can have an abortion because there’s a free trip to Anchorage involved.”
But wait! He didn’t stop there! When people started telling him how ridiculous this idea was, he doubled down on his baseless accusation in a Facebook post (of all things) to imply that women are also doing this to get free trips for their boyfriends, too.
You have to be a special kind of out-of-touch to think that women would seek out abortion care as an excuse to go to Anchorage for the day. This absurd suggestion make it crystal clear how out of touch Rep. Eastman is to the lived experiences of women seeking abortion care—and also that he has zero business representing Alaskan women in the State House. Having to figure out how to traverse hundreds of thousands of miles of rugged and dangerous terrain to access basic medical care because legislators like this think it’s their duty to legislate their own beliefs onto the lives and bodies of other people is not a free vacation. It’s misogyny.
It’s safe to say that this Dirty, Rotten, Sexist Scoundrel Award is long overdue and much deserved for Rep. Eastman.
