Take Action

It was two years after my divorce.

I was the single mother of a 9-year-old. I was in the first serious relationship since my divorce with a man who said he had had a vasectomy. To my shock I found myself pregnant by a married man who had told me he was single. I felt so dumb.

I grabbed the yellow pages and looked up abortion. I called the first place that had an ad that looked like they could help. It turned out to be a crisis pregnancy center. During the phone call I determined they were not interested in helping. The next ad was for a medical practice where they took care of all women’s health needs. I asked if they did abortions and when they said yes, I made an appointment for the next week.

The medical office was in a medical building adjacent to a local hospital. I parked in the hospital lot, went into the office. In the waiting room there were women in various stages of pregnancy, getting mammograms, pap smears, abortions and any other GYN care needed. There were no protesters. My company’s insurance covered the procedure. I only had to travel as far as I would for any other medical need. No one made any judgement of me.

After a brief wait I went into the procedure room, the doctor explained what he was going to do and in less than an hour I was back in my car on my way home. I have never looked back. I went on to have a very successful 30 year career with the employer whose insurance covered my abortion. My daughter is a successful college graduate. 15 years later I met and married the love of my life. Life is good.

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
